So you said yes to the dress. Congratulations! This major decision brings you that much closer to your big day. However, finding a dress doesn’t mean you’re done with this part of wedding planning. More than likely, you still have to deal with wedding dress alterations…
Since D&B Tailors has over 50 years of experience in alterations, we want to share with you a few tips to make your future visit to a tailor as smooth as possible. To start, in today’s post we’re going to discuss 5 dont’s of wedding dress alterations.
5 Dont’s of Wedding Dress Alterations
1. Don’t go to the cheapest tailor just to save a few dollars.
Finding an experienced and skilled tailor/ seamstress is crucial to handle all your specific wishes. If you want to make sure you hire the best tailor possible, first get references from people who have had work done and were pleased with the results. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for samples of finished work and always come prepared with plenty of questions.
2. Don’t schedule your fittings last minute.
Keep in mind that you’re going to need the minimum of 2-3 fittings, and it literally can save you money to plan your wedding dress alterations way ahead. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to find a tailor who has time to work on your dress on your schedule. Please keep in mind that evening and weekend appointments are always the first to book up (if they’re even offered)!
3. Don’t schedule your final dress fitting more than two weeks prior to the wedding, if possible.
Statistics say that over 90% of the brides lost several pounds during the 4-6 weeks before the wedding, regardless of whether they were trying to do so. Following this logic, any closer to the big day and there might not be enough time to fix alteration problems! Respectively, any further from the big day and there’s a chance the dress might not fit.
4. Don’t schedule a fitting right after a workout.
This should be a no brainer yet it’s often overlooked… Both you and your tailor will spend quite a bit of time together – in close physical proximity. To make it a pleasant experience, take a shower before your fitting because not only your tailor will appreciate, but also you don’t want to have sweat stains removed BEFORE you actually get to wear your dress!
5. During the fitting, please don’t move unless requested.
Moving during a fitting can cause the garment to be fitted unevenly (especially with hems and sleeves) or cause you to be accidentally poked with a pin. Not sure when it’s okay to move? Just ask.
There you have it. Next time you plan for your visit at a tailor, we hope you’ll have a pleasant experience! After all, planning a wedding should be the most exciting time in your life!
